The Source of Human Obligations

The only time in life that we freely and voluntarily assume onerous obligations, not out of fear of punishment, nor the prospect of advantage, but out of unconditional love, is the creation of new human life in our own image – assuming, of course, that we are not so in bondage to our primitive instincts that we are unable to recognize the ‘moral law’ as it ‘is presented to us for our obedience’. (References to Kant)
